Heading out of Cofton you will firstly encounter the olde-worlde waterfront harbour village of Cockwood. Soak up the legendary views of the bobbing boats and head into Starcross. Admire Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s historic atmospheric railway that makes Starcross internationally acclaimed. From then on, the route is entirely traffic-free as you head past Powderham Castle, perhaps you’ll be lucky and catch a glimpse of the deer than adorn the plentiful and lush green grounds.
The mud and sand of the Exe Estuary riverbed is rich and inviting for all sorts of natural wonders. The estuary is a traditional stop-off point for migratory birds, including Brent geese travelling from as far away as Siberia. You may not have travelled as far as that to get here, but a refreshing beverage at the remarkably positional Turf Locks Hotel is an entirely justified reward for your efforts!
