Autumn Breaks in Devon

Autumn Breaks in Devon

Autumn is a magical time of year and there really is no better place than Cofton for Autumn breaks in Devon, its time to appreciate the beautiful countryside, colours of the rolling hills and windswept beaches in Devon.

Outside of the hustle and bustle of the school holidays, the autumn is the perfect time for walkers, nature lovers, foodies and dog owners. As well as being an under-rated time of year to get away, lets not forget, autumn is a much cheaper time to get away for a break than the peak of summer, so also great for a thrifty pocket.

Autumn retreats

1. Mild Temperatures

There’s always something quite comforting about putting on a warm jumper and your favourite pair of leather boots after the summer months. Wrap up warm and head out for a glorious walk in the autumn breeze and take in the breathtaking scenery.

Dog friendly walks

2. Rolling Devon hills

As the autumn arrives, the leaves change into their glorious jewel-like colours, gold and red. Nothing quite beats a long walk, with some fantastic countryside and river valley views to enjoy.

At Cofton enjoy stunning views across Haldon Forest, a stumble through the private woodlands to Eastdon and a muddy stroll in our dog walking field.

If exploring is more your thing, you don’t have to go far for some true Devon gems, from the gorgeous blue flag Dawlish Warren beach, to the Estuary views across to Topsham and of course let’s not forget two stunning national parks right on our doorstep, with Exmoor and Dartmoor.

3. Strolls on uncrowded beaches

Beaches in the autumn may not have the same appeal as scorching summer days. But do not underestimate the wild beauty of South Devon’s beautiful coastlines take-on during the autumn months. This time of year welcomes a wealth of beautiful uncrowded beaches, with some fantastic quiet spots to read your book, take in the scenery or enjoy a hot chocolate with the sand beneath your toes.

#1 We’re open year-round

We don’t place a limit on when you can take your much-deserved holiday, and we appreciate that the summer sunshine isn’t for everyone. Escape with your pooch on a dog friendly holiday…

For those of us lucky enough to have a four-legged friend in the family, we all know the stress that going on holiday can trigger.

Can you leave them with a trusted friend or family member? Is there a dog sitter you can rely on to look after your precious pup?

Fortunately at Cofton, you don’t have to worry about leaving your pooch on their lonesome as we cater specifically for dogs!

Whether it’s our dog friendly holiday homes or allowing dogs on our pitches, we love welcoming dogs into our glorious corner.

Days out with dogs

It’s not just us, though. The whole area is packed with wonderful, dog friendly activities. We’ve got dog friendly beaches on our doorstep.

But our pick would be to head into Dartmoor and savour the world famous views.

The amazing thing about Dartmoor is how everyone experiences it differently; there’s such a vast landscape to explore that you’ll find your own perfect sanctuary away from the stress of everyday life.

For a dog, it must be heaven! A place with so many different smells, landscapes and terrains = a pawsome day out for dogs!

If you’re planning to head off on a jolly around Devon you won’t need to worry, either.

Crofton Dog Show

Here at Cofton, every summer we have our big American Car Show. It’s one of the best times of the year where we get some of the coolest muscle cars to cruise around Dawlish.

However, it’s not only the cars that are on show…

We also run our annual ‘Crofton Dog Show’ where we judge the coolest canine in Cofton.

So, if you think you’ve got the best looking bulldog or the coolest collie, why not show us next year? All the money raised will be going to a local dog charity.

Wonderful Wildlife at Cofton Holidays

At Cofton Holidays it’s very important to us to be environmentally friendly and welcome all kinds of wildlife, not just our holiday guests! When you take a stroll around our site, you’ll soon spot the little touches for all kinds of creatures…

Wildlife around Cofton…

Get closer to nature and visit our Bug and Bee Hotel just opposite reception. This facility provides the perfect safe habitat for nesting and hibernation! You’ll notice our blossoming flowerbeds and butterfly gardens dotted around the park; giving the opportunity for local wildlife to thrive. Not to mention the hedges are maintained with our 8-legged pals in mind!

Nothing speaks wildlife and habitat more than a lake does – and at Cofton we have five of them! These lakes are home to many species of fish; to maintain the habitats of the area there are several rules in place. For example, visitors mustn’t stand up with the fish and then return them safely to the water by using a landing net or sling.

At Cofton we’re lucky to have plenty of woodland walks on our doorstep. Take some time out and embark on a blissful stroll amongst the trees – It’ll be hard not to miss the furry residents including birds, squirrels and rabbits!

A holiday at Cofton isn’t complete if you don’t meet our resident cat called Millie. You’ll spot her saying hello to guests around the park and possibly in your caravan (if you invite her in!)

Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve…

There isn’t just wildlife at Cofton Holidays; Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve has a wide variety of coastal habitats and numerous birds. The area is a particularly valuable refuge for thousands of over-wintering and migratory waterfowl – around 180 different bird species are recorded each year! Up to 2000 species of invertebrate are found here; including the day-flying Jersey Tiger-Moth and colourful dragonflies such as the rare ruddy darter. The solitary sand wasps are also found here – they excavate tiny burrows and stock them with paralysed insect prey for their wasp grubs to eat!

In 2019, the staff at Cofton Holidays took part in a Beach Clean Up. The aim was to ensure Dawlish Warren’s nature reserve and beach are environmentally-friendly for wildlife and visitors alike!

Cofton and beyond…

When it’s time for you and your group to venture beyond Cofton you won’t be disappointed. It wouldn’t be a Devon holiday if your visit didn’t include getting sand between your toes at one of our golden beaches. Located at our Eastdon Estate, you’ll be a short drive to Dawlish and Dawlish Warren’s beaches. You could even take the trip across the estuary on the Starcross Ferry and give Exmouth a visit!

At Cofton we’re lucky to have the Exe Estuary Cycle Trail and the South West Coastal Path on our doorstep. So whether you’re on bike or foot you won’t miss out on the stunning scenery that the South West Coast has to offer.

30lb Carp stocked into Cofton Holiday Park Trusham Lake

We have welcomed 3 new specimen carp to our Trusham Lake to further add to the carp stock already present. This builds on last years stocking of 9 big carp to this lake and represents our ongoing investment in the fish stocks here at Cofton. These stunning big carp, handpicked by top fish farmers Priory Fisheries, are young fish  (8 years old) and still have lots of growing to do. They will hopefully bring lots of joy to our guests for many years to come. Trusham lake has a low stock of carp, around 80 fish and these target fish should have plenty of room to flourish. We are working hard this winter to remove the silver fish to further aid the environment for the carp.

30Ib carp

The biggest of the fish this mirror weighed in at 30lb 8oz. She is a long fish and has a lovely scale pattern.

This mirror weighed in at 27lb and is sure to be a star of the venue. She is deep with a hump back and has already shown me her character. Very lively, no water shot with this one she was having none of it!

Weighing in at 25lb this deep scarcely scaled mirror would put a smile on anyone’s face and is fantastic addition to this lake.

Book your next fishing holiday, for your chance to catch one of these fantastic Carp.
