Fishing Holidays at Cofton with Monster Carp’s Neil Spooner

This summer we were pleased to welcome Korda’s very own Neil Spooner to our Glorious Corner of Devon to sample the delights of our five fishing lakes. Known for starring in ITV4’s Monster Carp fishing show, Neil took a well-deserved holiday with his family that, of course, included a spot of fishing on our exclusive lakes.

We sat down with Neil lakeside to chat about his week-long stay in one of our new luxury lodges. “It spoiled us,” Neil says, “lovely views, hot tub in the evening with a glass of drink. Made it extra special.” he also takes us through what he thought of Cofton and finding the perfect balance between fishing and family time on holiday.

Watch the full video below where Neil discusses his tops tips on how he got the most from a family fishing holiday. This included short, early morning sessions before the family were up, travelling light with pre prepared PVA bag rigs so as not to lose time down on the lakes and really being able to relax as this trip was “not about setting PBs but coming to enjoy fishing while away with the family.”

Neil also talks us through making the most of his family holiday and keeping the kids entertained with our indoor and outdoor pools, local attractions and getting the whole family involved in some evening finishing. “Definitely a lovely thing to do, couldn’t get them off the lakes. They just wanted one last cast,” he tells us.

So, what was Neil’s final thoughts about his stay at Cofton? “Loved it so much, we’ll definitely be coming back!”

6 reasons to take advantage of a cosy autumn cottage holiday

With holidays in the UK more popular than ever and summer coming to a close, there’s no need to wait until next year to make the most of a break away. September through to Christmas is the time to explore the delights of crunchy autumn leaves and golden-hued sunsets, hearty pub food and uninterrupted family time.

Our cottage holidays at Cofton present the perfect opportunity to escape the everyday without sacrificing any of your favourite home comforts. If you’re not quite convinced, here are 6 reasons to take advantage of a cosy autumn cottage holiday this season.

#1 Indulge in a private, quality cottage break

We don’t scrimp on quality, so you can rest assured your escape will be comfortable in every way. Each stylish and modern country kitchen is well equipped with a dishwasher, microwave, hob and oven, and you don’t need to worry about feeling the autumnal chill as there’s central heating throughout too. Some of our cottages even come with hot tubs for if you want to add a touch of additional luxury to your quality cottage holiday.

Should you be blessed with clear skies, each cottage also has a private patio area with outdoor furniture, so an alfresco lunch is not out of the question. You could even opt for a barbecue!

No matter what delights you’ve experienced during the day, retiring back to one of our self-catering cottages is a rewarding prospect, and once you’re snuggled up amongst the Egyptian cotton linen, you’re sure to enjoy a restful night’s sleep.

#2 Soak up some spectacular scenery

We couldn’t be more excited to share our incredible location with all our visitors, and our coast and country cottages are perfectly placed for you to take advantage of some of the best scenery Devon has to offer.

From listening to the waves crash upon the shore during a refreshing walk on the sand, to an adventure on two wheels exploring the woodland, you can do as much (or as little) as you please. If you’d rather just relax and not venture too far from your cottage, you can simply admire the views of the surrounding hillsides before heading to the on-site country pub for a fulfilling homecooked dinner.

#3 Just take a weekend out

If it’s a short break that takes your fancy – come on down. We offer 3-night holidays which will see you through from Friday to Sunday, providing an idyllic weekend cottage break for you and your loved ones. A weekend away offers just enough time to take a dip in the indoor pool and open up your pores in the sauna, explore the rugged and sandy coastline, play at the arcade and indulge in a pub lunch or two. There are of course plenty of other activities and events we organise that are perfect to entertain yourselves during a weekend cottage break, no matter how kind (or unkind) the autumnal weather.

#4 Your pets are welcome too

We know that sometimes a holiday isn’t the same without the entire family, pooches included. We also appreciate that our location is pretty spectacular, and dogs love the outdoors whether rain or shine. That’s why we have a selection of pet-friendly holiday cottages to ensure your autumn break is fully inclusive! It’s time to make some memories exploring the golden, red and brown footpath of fallen leaves through the woodland trails before retiring to your cosy cottage for a well-earned brew.

#5 Unrivalled peaceful relaxation

If your everyday life tilts towards hectic, you can come to our country cottages to enjoy all the peace and quiet you could possibly want. As self-catering cottages, you can if you wish just spend the week or weekend improving your cooking skills, reading, relaxing, and drinking prosecco in the hot tub – your very own private bolthole to unwind and de-stress.

If you’re travelling as a couple, Estuary View or The Linney are wonderful choices, both with private hot tubs.

#6 You don’t need to wait around, grab a last-minute cottage

If you’re tempted to either seek solace or make some new fun family memories during an autumn cottage escape, be sure to check out our range of last-minute holiday deals. Not only does it mean saving money on your next UK cottage break, but it also means you get to go sooner! We’ve gone quackers to help you fight Covid 19!

Duck Whistles

With so many fantastic beaches, activities and country walking and cycling trails to explore here in South Devon, we understand that many families will want to go the extra mile to socially distance and protect their loved ones when holidaying with us.

That’s why our guests can now get complimentary duck whistles while stocks last to help them maintain a good social distance when exploring the local countryside and trails.

Available at reception while stocks last, parents and children alike need just blow on the whistle and make a loud ‘quack!’ sound to alert others to their presence. Many families are finding that the whistles are a fun way to protect themselves when the path ahead is unclear, such as in dense woodland or when passing dips and bends on walking and cycling trails.

The whistles are also being given out on our ‘Busy Bee’ escorted nature trail activity every Thursday – so hurry while stocks last!

We’ve put a whole host of other protective measures in place to keep your family safe too. These include additional hand washing facilities, reduced contact check in procedures (with Perspex screens installed at reception, shops and restaurants) and Personal Protective Equipment for staff.

There’s also new signage and floor stickers to encourage social distancing, and thorough deep cleaning procedures for accommodation, the park’s main complexes, toilets, shower facilities and ‘high touchpoint areas’ such as counters, tables or chairs.

As of Saturday 1st August, we’ll also be reopening our entertainment venue following a full redesign to reduce numbers and make it as Covid-safe as possible. You’ll find new procedures in place, such as the option to book tables for specific times ahead of time, spaced seating and reduced audience participation.

Top 5 things to do in Babbacombe

There’s always lots to explore during your stay at Cofton Holidays. And you won’t find many places that are as charming, beautiful and picturesque as Babbacombe. Situated a short distance from the busy, vibrant waterfront of Torquay harbour, Babbacombe offers a much more serene experience and may just be the jewel in the crown of the English riviera.

Just a short 30-minute drive from Cofton, the meandering scenic coast road offers up some truly breath-taking views on the way. This small Torquay suburb was a Victorian holiday hotspot, and on arrival it’s not hard to see why. The beautifully landscaped gardens of Babbacombe Downs, which at over 90 metres above sea level is the highest clifftop promenade in England, offers unparalleled views over red cliffs and wooded hilltops. In fact, on clear days you can even see across counties and as far as Portland Bill in Dorset.

From the mix of independent shops, secluded beaches, coastal walks, water sports and bars and restaurants, there really is something for the whole family to enjoy. Here are our top 5 things to do on a visit to Babbacombe.

1. Babbacombe Model Village

If you’ve ever wanted to feel like a giant (and let’s face it, who hasn’t?), then the model village is for you. This miniature world is big on fun. Set in 4 acres of magnificent award-winning gardens, the intricately crafted models and scenes are full of whimsey, wonder and humour. Some of our favourites include the Paignton Zoo model, a west country fishing village, the peek inside house and the new Celebrity Mansion – see what famous faces you can spot!

The miniature world is full of model scenes and animated displays with all kinds of goings on that depict British life over the last 60 years. Full of humorous subtle touches, it is very important to take your time or there’s a lot you might miss!

On Thursday evenings from April to October, the village is transformed into a glowing spectacle. Thousands of miniature lights illuminate the models and scenes to create an enchanting atmosphere not to be missed.

2. Oddicombe and Babbacombe Beach

What good is a trip to the seaside if you don’t come back with sand in between your toes from a walk on the beach? Babbacombe doesn’t disappoint with two beaches that are within a short walk from the Downs, each with their own unique character.

Babbacombe Beach is a small secluded pebble beach that is perfect for sitting on with a picnic. This pretty crescent-shaped cove backs on to the wooded cliffs and is the perfect place to rest and grab a refreshment from the café hut after the walk down from the top. If you would rather save your legs, then there is a pay and display car park on hand. Dogs are welcome all year round so you can even bring your four-legged friends.

With a small stone breakwater at one end, this sheltered beach provides a great spot for a quick dip in the sea or for the kids to have a paddle. The calm, clear water also makes it a popular diving spot and is perfect for beginners, so why not bring along your snorkel? And don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for dolphins that are often seen swimming off the shore.

Just around the corner is Babbacombe’s second and largest beach. With its long stretch of red sand, Oddicombe Beach is the perfect place to while away the hours soaking up the sun and splashing around in the sea.

With beach hut hire, water sports, beach shop and café all on hand, there’s something to keep the whole family entertained. Hire a kayak or pedalo to paddle out to sea and look back at the dramatic coastline in all of its splendour. Enjoy a refreshing tipple or sample the delights of the menu of the Three Degrees West Bar & Bistro. Enjoy everything from breakfast to tapas, as well as the views, from their outside terrace.

The nearest car park is about half a mile away and access to Oddicombe Beach is a walk down a steep road. Or…..

3. Babbacombe Cliff Railway

Take the easy option to reach to Oddicombe Beach and ride the amazing Babbacome Cliff Railway. Set amongst some of the most stunning landscape to be found in the UK, the Cliff Railway is a fun, unique and less physically demanding way to get to and from the water’s edge of one of South Devon’s most beautiful beaches.

Since opening in 1926, the Babbacombe Cliff Railway has shuttled hundreds of thousands of people up and down the steep cliff face to the sandy shore of Oddicombe Beach. Take in the amazing views out across the bay as you travel the 220 metres of track towards the beach. With over 90 years of service this is a truly unique way to travel in style and reach the sandy beaches!

The lift runs all year round with the first car departing at 9:30 and the last car of the day leaving the beach at 16:30, but please check their website for the latest opening hours and ticket prices.

4. Babbacombe Theatre

For over 80 years Babbacombe Theatre has been entertaining people and it’s no wonder that it has become one of the South West’s most popular venues. With a host of musical acts, bands, comedians, pantomimes and variety shows taking to the stage, there’s always something on that’s worth seeing.

Babbacombe Theatre is renowned for its self-produced variety show that runs every Tuesday and Wednesday evening from February to October. Featuring some of the region’s best talent, as well as a few famous you might just recognise, we highly recommend that you catch a show.

The theatre also welcomes touring productions from some of the country’s top comedians, who will have you roaring with laughter, and musical events that will have you singing and dancing in the aisles. So, whether you’re looking for a family night out or a romantic date night, this much-loved theatre will ensure you’re kept entertained.

5. Food & Drink in Babbacombe

If food and drink are more your thing, then the choice of pubs and restaurants in Babbacombe will leave you spoilt for choice. From traditional pub fare and gastro delights, to ice cream parlours and sun-soaked beer gardens, there’s something for every taste.

A personal favourite of ours that’s perfect for a special occasion or a romantic visit for 2, is the cosy Angel Tea Rooms. Serving up a truly delicious afternoon tea with freshly made sandwiches and homemade cakes, just try and make sure you leave room for those scones and Devon clotted cream.

If it’s a more traditional seaside feast you looking for, what could be better than fish and chips? Hanbury’s have been serving up award-winning fish and chips for over four decades. From the first taste it’s not hard to see why this is the local’s favourite. We find they’re best enjoyed sitting on the downs looking out over that perfect view.
