The joy of coming to South Devon on a cosy cottage break before Christmas is the wide range of festive things to do. There are countless Christmassy things to do this time of year, but if Christmas shopping is your bag then here are our top recommendations for finding that perfect gift or treat for yourself.

Michaelmas Fair

The Michaelmas Fair is only a short drive away from our cottages at Powderham Castle. If you’re after wonderful handmade items wonders and lovingly crafted pieces, this is the place for you. You won’t find these gifts on the high street and the event is also supporting The ABF – The Soldiers’ Charity.

Dawlish Farmers Market

If you’re after something a bit more low-key, then maybe the Dawlish Farmers Market is for you. Have a lazy breakfast at your home from home, which should be a breeze to prepare because our cottage kitchens are fully equipped with everything to make a hearty feast or a healthy snack. But don’t be too late to the market because it starts at 10.00am every second Saturday of the month right on Dawlish Seafront. It’s the perfect way to take a leisurely stroll by the seaside while browsing the finest produce our glorious corner of Devon has to offer. Everything from cheeses, pies, ales and cakes – it’s the perfect place to stock up on some tasty local treats.

Princesshay Shopping Centre

If you’re looking for the glitz and glamour of Christmas that the high street retailers do so well, then Exeter’s Princesshay shopping centre is the best place to be. With all the big brand names you could possibly want, Princesshay links up seamlessly with the high street and the newly refurbished Queen St dining area. Don’t forget to try and fit in a visit to Exeter’s Underground Passages if you have the time…

Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market

In the midst of all of this, it would be easy to forget one of the main attractions, the famed Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market. With a mix of acclaimed continental traders, local crafters and performers, this years’ Christmas Market is shaping up to be the best yet. It’s a fantastic Christmassy place to be, with around 80 traditional continental chalets and plenty of places to get a mulled wine or festive treat. It’s on from 16th November to 17th December, so add it to your list of Christmas must-do’s!
