29 May 2019

We are absolutely delighted with the news that Dawlish Warren Beach has won the prestigious Blue Flag Award for it’s 21st year!

We of course are not at all surprised, as we are very aware of just how much hard work goes into maintaining this beautiful beach. Thank you to Teignbridge Leisure for keeping up the good work.

Dawlish Warren Beach

Here at Cofton we are particularly proud of Dawlish Warren beach, as winning the Blue Flag award makes it a very safe beach for tourists and a great place for endless family seaside fun.

The beach stretches out for 1.5 miles with plenty of sand dunes, a great place for families to enjoy playing in the water knowing that the RNLI lifeguards are keeping an eye on safety.

National Nature Reserve

As well as the fabulous Sandy beach, Dawlish Warren is internationally respected for wildlife. The Warren has a wide variety of coastal habitats, numerous birds, the mudflat’s being a particularly valuable refuge for thousands of over-wintering and migratory waterfowl. The Warren harbours nationally important populations of the following bird species in winter: black tailed godwit, brent goose, ringed plover, dunlin, grey plover, slavonian grebe, red-breasted merganser, oystercatcher, wigeon and teal. Around 180 different bird species are recorded each year.

It is thought that 2000 species of invertebrate are found here, including the spectacular day-flying Jersey Tiger-Moth, colourful dragonflies, such as the rare ruddy darter, and solitary sand wasps which excavate tiny burrows and stock them with paralysed insect prey for their wasp grubs to eat!

There are almost 600 different types of flowering plant including the warren or sand crocus.

Walking the Warren

As well as wildlife there are countless walking routes for you to enjoy from long rambles, short poetry walks, bird watching, local history and spooky walks as well as healthy stretches along the lanes.

Commitment to the environment

Dawlish Warren have always been passionate about protecting the coast line with regular initiatives for litter picking and various conservation projects along the beach.

New to Dawlish Warren are specialist litter pickers and bins on the beach so that people can do their bit and help to keep Dawlish Warren clean.
