Dawlish Warren: A True Devon Holiday Location
21 December 2015
Are you dreaming of sandy beaches and space to roam on your next trip to the South West? Whatever the time of year, Dawlish Warren is a popular spot for a day out. Within comfortable cycling or walking distance from our Dawlish holiday park, you’ll find no shortage of fun, fresh air and things to do at this most classic of seaside resorts. For generations of Devon visitors it has been a firm favourite, with both a bustling hive of activities and caravan parks, yet also beautiful walks and wildlife. Here’s our own rough guide:
Where is Dawlish Warren Located?
The Warren sits on the west side of the Exe Estuary, between Starcross and Teignmouth. The area encompasses two main areas; one of the best loved holiday complexes in Devon, alongside one of its most interesting nature reserves. That said it is only half an hour from Exeter and the M5. A mixture of fun and escapism, all within easy reach for the Devon visitor, you might say.
Perfect for Devon Beach Holidays
Perhaps the biggest draw of the Warren is the mixture of excitement and seclusion. Within just a few square miles you have both delightful sandy beaches and a lively area of bars, games and more. Whether you want to join the crowd or escape from it, find a beach hut to hire or take a hike, this is one of the most popular spots in Devon.
Walk on the Wild Side in Devon!
For those who love wildlife or simply long for a taste of Devon as nature intended, the western part of the Warren will be of most interest. This wilder side is popular with walkers and nature lovers, and Dawlish Nature Reserve is one of the most important places for rare plants and bird watching in Devon. An astonishing number of species can be found in the area while further round it can also provide good sea fishing from the beach.
So many attractions near Dawlish Warren…
Of course, a walk through the sand dunes or looking through a pair of binoculars isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. If so, head to the other side of the Warren where you’ll find various attractions. There are rides for the kids (including a miniature railway), bars and amusements, plus the Pirates Cove Crazy Golf Course and other diversions the family will enjoy. It’s also a great spot for beach games, swimming or a bit of kayaking or stand up paddleboarding (SUP). Do keep close to shore and look out for some strong currents however, especially on bigger tides.
The town of Dawlish itself is also very nearby, with shops, pubs and a museum. Last but not least, there is also Dawlish Warren Golf Course on the other side of the nature reserve. It is well regarded among links golf courses in Devon, with some challenging holes and cracking views over the Exe Estuary.
The best way to stay in Dawlish Warren
Being one of the most popular holiday resorts in Devon, the visitor is spoilt for choice when it comes to campsites, caravan parks and places to stay in Dawlish Warren. It is a busy, bustling place in the summer, however, so for those who would prefer a quieter, greener spot, Cofton Country Holidays is ideal. You’ll never be pushed for parking, while you can still easily get to the Warren by bike or on foot (it is roughly two miles away and it’s a pretty walk or cycle ride with some great views if you take the scenic route). There are also some nice sheltered spots to take a kayak or try stand up paddleboarding (SUP), but do watch for some powerful tide rips each day.
Do take a look at our main site for a whole range of accommodation options to suit any budget, including our current special offers. Whether you fancy a stay in one of our cosy cottages by the sea, one of our touring pitches in your own caravan or an ideal spot for camping, we’re sure to have an option to suit you perfectly, along with brilliant food and facilities.

The Warren Family
I just want to say how impressed my fellow Motorhomers and Caravaners were with the welcome and service we received during our stay. Staff in the office were polite and helpful at all times. Scott the restaurant manager was most accommodating when I enquired about reserving space for 25 to 30 of us for lunch after a walk. The service in the restaurant was speedy the food hot and varied. We were very pleased with the standards. Staff in the restaurant were cheerful and polite and helped make our meal most enjoyable. We had such a good time that we will be returning again next year for our Xmas Rally.

We usually camp 3 times a year and hire a caravan after the Christmas break at Cofton, and will continue to do so. We thoroughly recommend staying there. Great for families or just the 2 of you.
